Buttercup, a flower of the canine variety

Chester has to wear a cone as he had to have a tumour removed in quite an awkward and private place, which at first was quite terrifying, then quite expensive but is now looking more positive. The cone situation has been interesting to watch. Putting the cone on him at first clearly depressed him and that wasn’t helped when Otto started giving him suspicious looks. It became apparent that Otto regarded the whole cone situation with distrust, which soon extended beyond the cone to be equated with Chester as well. He seemed convinced that Chester had been replaced with a changeling and started keeping a safe distance, maintaining one eye on him at all times and trying to warn us with a serious of complicated eye movements…

In the meantime, Chester seems to have grown to enjoy the cone – he seems to think it’s the ultimate accessory – or maybe he just enjoys messing with Otto’s mind. But that seems unlikely even though it would earn him more respect. He genuinely seems to love Otto which is a real mystery since frankly, as lovable as Otto is (and as cuddly as he looks), he’s not the sort of dog most other dogs would choose as their best friend. He’s mean, steals all the toys, takes the best spots and generally has issues sharing, unless of course it means sharing what you have….

It also turns out that those cones make excellent weapons. Chester frequently bangs into things, most commonly the back of your legs, where he stays jammed long enough for you to get the edge of the cone imprinted on your skin. Of course that could be part of an insurgency plan…

As he gets older, Otto has become increasingly paranoid that people will steal his treats and has developed “squirrel cheeks” which basically involves jamming his treats into his cheeks until he can find a safe place to eat them…
